I thought about this, and it's hard to weight the options. So even if I could get away with spending around $700 to max out my RAM and SSD, that's still cheaper than getting even a used MacBook Pro that is maxed out. Within those limits, can I use any type of technology, any brands, etc? Are some better than others? What would make one type of RAM or SSD less compatible than another? Thanks! I see that there are limits to my upgrades. Just SSDs for working drives.ĭoes that mean that vRAM doesn't exist in any physical way? How does one use vRAM? Does it bind to the existing technology in some way? But I can't afford to get all SSD now to cover my storage needs. The fans I'm referring to are related to standard hard drives I'm very particular. Whatever I do, I'm hoping to build a setup through upgrades that will get me through 2-3 years. Here are my specs to put things in perspective. My MacBook does not have a retina display. Lastly, if I spend the money on these upgrades will this still be sufficient even if I'm not upgrading the CPU or GPU? Can either be changed or are they irreplaceable?

How about the RAM? I have two 4GB RAM now, but is there any reason why I couldn't double that? And what is vRAM? How does it work to install that alongside "normal" RAM? Can one stick of vRAM be installed along with one stick of "normal" RAM? Do they serve a mutually beneficial purpose within my computer? I ask because I've gotten into videography and I hear that it's important. What can and can't I upgrade? I have 1TB hard drive now, but is there any reason why I can't put a 4-5TB SSD in it? (Yes, I understand about voiding warranties and all, but it's either that or deal with extra external hard drives.) So I've thought about upgrading my MacBook in order to get a few more years of use out of it. I'm also particular about noise and don't want to worry about listening to fans hum. My first tendency was to get a few external hard drives, but I travel and don't want to lug too many of those around.

Since I work with big media projects that take up lots of space, I've run out of room on my computer.

I had these issues on two occasions for 13” Macbook Pros from 2012.I have some general upgrade questions. After hours of reinstalling and re-corrupting the MacOS on a new SSD I was installing, I ordered a new SATA cable. The most recent time, the new cable did not fix the problem. I then read about SSDs not tolerating erroneous data sent along SATA cables very well, with the suggestion that the cable would produce data errors because of it rubbing against the aluminum case. The instruction was to insulated the cable from rubbing against the aluminum case by putting a few strips of electrical tape beneath the cable, on the case where the flat SATA cables run.

I did that and then suddenly the new cable worked, and no more corruption of my installations. I never did throw the old cable back in to test if the tape was a singular fix (I was just happy to see the SSD show up in Recovery again), but I sure kept the potentially-fine cable for a future fix. TL DR - Make sure you put an insulated barrier between the aluminum surface and your SATA cable electric tapes works fine!ĭifferent thing are happening to different people here. I wanted to replace the 500GB SATA hard drive in my MacBook Pro with a 750GB disk. I hooked the 750GB up to the MacBook through an external USB - SATA interface. Formatted the 750GB disk, did a clean install of Mavericks and moved a bunch of my stuff across from the 500GB.Ĭould happily boot up the new system on the 750GB disk while attached to the USB - SATA interface.
